Can I Have A Word?

The Ramblings of a Wannabe Author

Wonderful Things that made me smile!

Posted by The Secret Writer on November 16, 2009

My writing has taken a backseat over the past few days and that’s really not good.  I’m typing this blog post very quickly so please forgive me if there are mistakes in any way - I hope that despite any mistakes you know what I’m wittering on about.

First wonderful thing that made me smile was I won a competition!  I won something – I haven’t won anything since I was 9 and that was a frisbee with a toothbrush on it and even then that was a runners-up prize.  I’ve never won a proper competition in my life.  But recently I have!  Woooo!

I found out that I had won a competition run by a recently published author on her website.  I’m keeping her name off the blog unfortunately as she’s put my real name on her website and I don’t want anyone to find out my real name by doing some sums – but I’m sure the blog world knows who I’m on about ;)   I was chuffed to win some expensive chocolates (Seriously yummy) a necklace (that I think is seriously fab) and a signed book (which reduced me to tears with the message the author wrote inside).  Thank you again ;)

The second wonderful thing that happened that made me smile was the Muse gig exactly one week ago.  I went with the boyfriend and it was probably one of the best nights of my life.  I loved it.  I had a fantastic time and Muse really put on a fantastic show.  Going to the gig all stemmed from a promise my boyf made to me on our first date.  I’m sure he did it to impress me and it worked - more so now that’s he’s kept his promise.  It means so much.  Thank you, you!

Work has been a bitch as usual.  And life has got in the way but recently I’ve been smiley and that’s all good.

NaNo Day 16 ~ ARGH!

Posted by The Secret Writer on November 16, 2009

I’m behind.  I’m very very very behind.  I’m on 18,411 words and by the end of today I should be on 26,667 approx.  This is not good.  Although saying that the words I have written so far I like.  I really like.  So all is going well – I just have to find the time to do more writing.

Finding the time is hard but I’m hoping that things will change soon and I’ll have all the time in the world. :)

Nano Day 8 ~ Trying to catch up!

Posted by The Secret Writer on November 8, 2009

So after starting my nano novel from scratch I’ve been trying to catch up with the 1667 words a day thing.  I’ve not managed it yet.  As you can see from this chart, at the time of publishing this post, I have 1876 words to do per day if I want to get to 50,000 words by the end of November.  That’s a lot of words to do in a day so I’m pushing myself to do more each day so that I can get back to 1667 or less.  Can’t remember which day it was, might have been Thursday I did a whopping 5k words in one day so it is possible to do a lot of words if I get my arse in gear.

Today, so far,  I’ve done a massive 2866 words today bringing my total up to 9656 words.  I’m hoping to get well over the 10k mark tonight.

I’m off work for the next two days so I’m hoping to get a fair bit of writing done during the day but saying that I have two things to look forward to; one on Monday night (I’m seeing Muse live at the SECC  – so excited!!!!!!!!!) and one on Tuesday night (A local derby football match between my team and our nearest rivals) so I’ll probably be too excited to do any writing although I will try to force myself to get at least a few hundred words done.

So far this NaNo novel is going very well, I’m glad I started again.  I think it’s the best decision I’ve made.  This one is much better than the idea I had before.  The other one stank!  It was awful and I struggled with it.  This one is a much better idea and the words are just following (most of the time).

Right, back to the words!!

NaNo Day 5 ~ BIG NEWS!

Posted by The Secret Writer on November 5, 2009

At work today, I decided to do something about my NaNoWriMo novel.

I scrapped it.

I was struggling.  I didn’t like where it was going. I didn’t like it one bit.  And if I didn’t like it, there’s not a chance in hell anyone else would.

So I decided to start NaNoWriMo again, with a new Novel.  4 days into November and NaNoWriMo, can I write 50,000 words in 26 days instead?

So far I think the answer is a big fat YES!  I don’t know what’s come over me but with this new idea I have, the words have just flown from my finger tips.  Earlier, I managed a good 1040 words in 45 minutes and as of now I’ve managed 3007 words in total.  That’s a MASSIVE 3007  today alone!!  I could have only dreamt of doing that with my other NaNo idea.

The excitement is back.

The enthusiasm is back.

I’m back!  Yay!

NaNo Day 3 ~ Madwoman and Broken sites

Posted by The Secret Writer on November 3, 2009

I’ve been writing like a madwoman all evening and I’m about to give up for the night.

I’ve managed a grand total of 14o2 words today.  It’s not the daily target of 1667 but it’s as close as I’m going to get.  I was hoping to update my NaNoWriMo profile page but the website is playing up nearly every time I go on it. So I’ve decided to take that as a sign to stop for the night.

Plus I’ve got a cold coming on and I want some time tonight to recharge my batteries and to take some medicine.  I need time to relax and chill.  I don’t want to start panicking and my health suffers.

So in total I’ve got 4025 words.  It’ll do.  It’ll do!

NaNo Day 2 ~ So it Begins….

Posted by The Secret Writer on November 2, 2009

I posted yesterday’s blog post before I did any writing and I can update you all by saying I did a grand total of 1091 words on Day 1 of NaNoWriMo.  Now, while that’s not the Daily Target of 1667 words, it’s a good solid start considering I was away from my laptop for the majority of the day.  So I’m happy with that.  It’s all good.

So today, Day 2, what have I done?  How many of the blighters have I knocked out today (so far!)?

754 words @ 17:22 on Day 2 of NaNo.

In total that’s 1845 I’ve got so far.  I’m hoping to get well over 2000 by the end of tonight, hopefully nearer 3000 but I’m not putting too much pressure on myself cos I’ll just get in a flap otherwise.

I’m already thinking ahead about which days I’ll be busy or have something else on and won’t be able to do any writing and I’m hoping that I can get ahead of myself so that when I do have something else planned I’ll be able to enjoy it without feeling guilty that I’m not writing (See? I’m already expecting to get in a flap at some stage over the next few weeks!)

Right, time to get something to eat, watch a bit of crap television and then back to the words.  :)

NaNo Day 1 ~ Argh!

Posted by The Secret Writer on November 1, 2009

So it’s the 1st of November….

That means it’s NaNoWriMo time!

Woooo!

Ah.

Okay.

It’s 18:42 and I’ve no words written.  I do have a good reason though.  I’ve not been anywhere near my laptop to do any writing as I’ve been away to a Halloween Party and seeing the boyf - who I will only see a handful of times in November - he understands that writing is a must this month and is willing to cut the time we see each other all the name of my writing :) .

And since I’ve been away I’ve also had to catch up on all my correspondence (ie Facebook, Twitter, Emails, Bebo, Google Reader… etc)

I hope to get some words written before bed but I won’t be able to update my NaNo Profile  word count or the word count on this blog until tomorrow.

Must.  Switch.  Off.  Internet.  Now!

Very Busy Part 2- So what did I get done?

Posted by The Secret Writer on November 1, 2009

So in my last post I listed all the things I needed to do.   It’s safe to say I think I managed to do most of it, to an extent.  And let’s just say I’m very very tired.

The less said about the Halloween party the better, if I’m honest.  It wasn’t really my cup of tea – was led to believe it was an adults party but it was more a children’s party with a few adults.  And I’m not a big fan of children (UNDERSTATEMENT OF THE CENTURY!) so I just sat beside the food (and drink) all night  apart from when we were playing games like Poo-a-tattie and Balloon Stomp.   I also got heckled by the boyf’s family cos I wouldn’t  ‘dook’ for an apple but I promise you, you wouldn’t have wanted to ‘dook’ for an apple either with the little kids (and some adults) snorting in the water!  Eugh!  Next Halloween I’m dressing up as the Child Catcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang – I make him look like Mary Poppins.  And I’m not joking.

Very busy!

Posted by The Secret Writer on October 29, 2009

I’m very busy at the moment and it’s getting to me.

  1. I have to finish making my Batgirl costume.  The costume is actually all done, I just need to make little pocket things for my ‘utility’ belt and change some batty earrings into a batty necklace.
  2. I’ve to break in my knee-high boots to go with the Batgirl costume.  I’ve worn them once and that was for 5 mins.  I’m so going to suffer on Saturday night.
  3. I have to carve my pumpkin tonight.  I’m not making a pumpkin pie at home this year as I just don’t have the time.  Although carving a pumpkin is a must and since tonight is the only night I’ll be home to enjoy it before Halloween then the carving must take place tonight.
  4. I have a huge pile of washing that needs done before Sunday.
  5. I have to go shopping tomorrow night with the boyf to get a pumpkin and various kitchen implements for making a Pumpkin Pie (at his place) to take with us when we go to his parents’ house on Saturday before the Halloween party we’ve been invited to.
  6. I have to make the Pumpkin Pie tomorrow night with the boyf as my assistant.
  7. I have to watch some Most Haunted Live, Live!  I’ve missed a good chunk of it due to various reasons.
  8. I’ll have about 16 hours of Most Haunted Live to watch after this weekend as my mum has been/ will be recording the shows that I’ve missed.
  9. I have to go to work as usual.
  10. I have to go visit my gran tomorrow afternoon.
  11. I have to prepare for NaNoWriMo which starts this Sunday.
  12. I want to spend some time with my mum who is having a tough time at the moment.
  13. My dad wants to see me at some point over the weekend as we haven’t seen each other for over a month.
  14. I have to figure out a costume to wear for work on Saturday – not vital as I can’t really be bothered so I might just wear my uniform as usual.
  15. I have to prepare for meeting the boyf’s parents again.  And his cousins.  And any other family members that’ll be a the party on Saturday night.
  16. I have to get some sleep at some stage.
  17. I have to eat.
  18. I have to shower and wash.
  19. I have to contend with really bad traffic getting to and from work – Today it took 1hr 15mins to get home whereas it usually take 25 minutes.  Grrrrr!
  20. I have really really really painful feet and can barely walk.

I’m knackered.  I’m surprised I was able to find the time to write this blog post.  I suppose it acts as a to-do list as well.

P.S. If you can’t comment for some reason, drop me a line and I’ll see if I can sort it! :)

See you after Halloween and whatever you get up to, have fun!

Eureka! I’ve got it!

Posted by The Secret Writer on October 27, 2009

For the past few days I’ve been humming and ahhhhing about NaNoWriMo.  When I decided to do NaNoWriMo again a few weeks ago, I had an idea but I wasn’t sure where I wanted to go with the idea.  I wasn’t sure if it had legs to stand on.  I wasn’t sure if I could do the idea justice.

And I’m still not entirely sure I could do what I had planned.

So.

I’ve come up with another idea.

And this one might have legs.  I don’t think it’s as strong as my original idea but it’s more to my style of writing.  My original idea would have been very hard for me to do.   I would have been out of my comfort zone and probably would have messed it up and therefore messed up my idea.

So I’m happy.

I have an idea.

I can officially take part in NaNoWriMo.

I can stop panicking now!

Yay!
